Thank you Franklin and Medway

The results from the November 6, 2012 election are in and on January 2, 2013, Jeff Roy will be sworn in as the next State Representative for the 10th Norfolk District.  Roy secured 11,835 votes to win the 10th Norfolk seat over Rich Eustis who gathered 9,961 votes.

You can view the Milford Daily News report on the election by clicking here.  The Boston Globe report is available here.  Precinct by precinct results for Franklin are available here.  Seventeen thousand five hundred voters cast their ballots in Franklin for an approximately 85% turnout.  In Medway, 5,213 voters cast ballots in this race.

In a statement issued after the election, Roy thanked everyone who participated in the campaign. “It was your enduring support and encouragement that helped fulfill a dream for me,” he said. “I will never forget how you gave of your time and energy because you believed in this campaign. We shared a set of core values about how government can work, not by doing things for others, but by providing opportunities for people to help themselves. We started with a simple idea about securing the type of government we want, and how we as citizens would come together to make Massachusetts a better place to work and live. We knocked on thousands of doors and engaged in community conversations. We heard concerns about doing everything in our power to give citizens the opportunity to participate in the American Dream. I look forward to working with you to fulfill those dreams.”

On Wednesday morning, Roy and several members of Team Roy gathered out in front of Franklin Village Plaza to thank morning commuters for their support.  It was a bit nippy, but the team still had some adrenaline from Tuesday to keep them warm.

Milford Daily News endorses Roy for State Rep

It was a great honor to receive the endorsement from the Milford Daily News today. Here is what the paper had to say:

Roy for state representative

The exit of Rep. Jim Vallee, D-Franklin, from the Legislature has left large shoes to fill and inspired a hard-fought contest to succeed him in the 10th Norfolk district.

Jeffrey Roy of Franklin won the Democratic primary. An attorney, Roy is a Franklin Town Council member and served 10 years on the Franklin School Committee, nine of them as chairman. He knows the district well, and has experience with statewide issues, including the School Building Assistance program (he helped guide planning for the new Franklin High School), public transportation (he rides the Franklin line daily) and the criminal justice system.

Richard Eustis, an attorney from Medway, won the Republican primary. Eustis is an intelligent and reasonable alternative for those who favor the Republican approach emphasizing tax cuts, deregulation and limited government.

Roy’s years in municipal government give him a decided edge in experience. His confidence that activist government can help businesses, communities and residents all prosper together leads us to offer JEFF ROY our endorsement.

Fernandes endorses Roy in State Rep race

John Fernandes, who serves as State Representative for the 10th Worcester District consisting of the towns of Milford, Mendon and Hopedale and who will assume representation of Precinct One in the town of Medway beginning January 2013, has endorsed Jeffrey Roy for State Representative in the 10th Norfolk District race. The 10th Norfolk District covers all of Franklin and Precincts 2, 3, and 4 in Medway. James Vallee retired from the seat this year after having served for 20 years.

In endorsing Roy, Fernandes stated, “I know and like Jeff Roy’s opponent but I believe Roy to clearly be the best candidate to succeed Jim Vallee. I have known Jeff Roy personally for a very long time and have always been impressed with his character, energy, optimism and competence. His fourteen years of volunteer service on the Franklin School Committee and Franklin Town Council demonstrate his ability to make government work for the people it serves. It provides the experience that I believe invaluable to service at the state level.”

Fernandes went on to say that, “Jeff Roy’s experience as a school committee member dealing with the challenge of maintaining vital public services with declining revenue during this recession immediately prepares and qualifies him to continue that work at the state level. That challenge is exactly the same one we have and will continue to face in the state house and his work in local government will allow him to hit the ground running in representing Medway and Franklin. The challenge will not be a hypothetical one to Jeff. It will be one he has managed well through this recession. I am proud to offer Jeff Roy my support in this contest and look forward to working together with him for the betterment of Medway.”

Mr. Fernandes entered the legislature in January 2007. He currently serves as Vice Chair of the Joint Committee on the Judiciary. He also serves as a member of the Rules Committee, and the House Steering and Policy Committee. He has served as Vice Chair of the Committee on Children Families and Disabilities, has also served on the Committees on Transportation and Elder Affairs. Fernandes is the House Co-Chair of the MetroWest Legislative Caucus. He recently served as Co-Chair of the legislature’s Alimony Reform Task Force.

Mr. Fernandes has a long history of service to his community. He was elected a member of the Milford Board of Selectmen at the age of twenty-two. He also served for nine years as a member of the Milford School Committee and for seven years as a member of School Committee for the Blackstone Valley Regional Vocational Technical High School. Mr. Fernandes was a member of the Milford Rotary Club for ten years.

Senator Spilka and Atty. Padula endorse Roy

State Sen. Karen Spilka today endorsed Jeffrey Roy to be the next State Representative for Franklin and Medway, declaring that Roy’s public service “has made a significant difference” on behalf of citizens of Franklin, and predicting that he will be a “highly effective advocate” for the residents and businesses in Franklin and Medway.  You can view the video of Senator Spilka’s remarks by clicking here.

Senator Spilka endorsed Roy at an event at Coffee Sensations in Medway. In January, she was appointed by Senate President Therese Murray to serve as Assistant Majority Whip in the State Senate. She co-chaired the Commonwealth’s Job Creation Commission, which released its final report last week.

“I have worked closely with Jeff on school and town issues as a State Senator, and watched him lead the school system and make a significant difference. He will be a highly effective advocate and great representative for the citizens of Franklin and Medway,” Spilka said. “Jeff is not someone who is shy and he will speak up on behalf of his constituents. He knows and understands the needs of the district and I look forward to working with him on behalf of our communities.”

“I am deeply honored to have earned Sen. Spilka’s support,” Roy said. “She has been a great leader in the Massachusetts Senate and has delivered results for our communities. Her door was always open to anyone who needed help, and I had the privilege of working with her on a number of town and school issues. It would be an honor and privilege to join her at the State House to work on behalf of the citizens of Franklin and Medway.”

Peter Padula also lent his support and endorsement to the campaign, recognizing the hard and clean race for the Democratic nomination.  He noted that Jeff is in “great shape” to represent Franklin and Medway, and that he was here to support Jeff and help him win in November.  You can view Padula’s remarks by clicking here.

A heartfelt thanks go out to Senator Spilka and Attorney Padula.

Rep. Vallee Endorses Roy to Represent Franklin and Medway

We received very special news and support tonight with the endorsement from Rep. Jim Vallee.  You can click on the image below to see the video.  Below that you will find the press release.

Former State Rep. James Vallee today endorsed Jeffrey Roy to succeed him as the next State Representative for Franklin and Medway, declaring that Roy “knows and understands the needs of the district” and “will deliver the hard work” that residents and businesses expect and deserve.

Vallee, who chose not to seek re-election to the Legislature after an 18-year career, endorsed Roy as his successor at an event at the Franklin headquarters of Clark-Cutler-McDermott Company, a leading manufacturer of innovative products for the automotive industry.

“I have worked closely with Jeff on school and town issues throughout my career, and I can say without hesitation that he is the best choice to go to bat for the people and the businesses of Franklin and Medway,” Vallee said. “The job of a state representative is to be accessible and to get things done. No one can match Jeff’s record of getting results on the local level. He knows and understands the needs of the district and I’m confident he will deliver the hard work this district expects.”

“I am deeply honored to have earned Jim’s support,” Roy said. “He always delivered for our communities; he never let politics get in the way of getting results; and, his door was always open to anyone who needed help. Jim set the standard and I will work hard to carry forward that legacy. This job is about getting results for people, and I will be ready to hit the ground running after the election.”

Roy is on the November 6 ballot for Vallee’s former legislative seat in 10th Norfolk District, which includes all of Franklin and Precincts 2, 3 and 4 in Medway.

Roy is currently a member of the Franklin Town Council and is an attorney in Boston. He previously served on the Franklin School Committee from 2001 through 2011 and held the position of Chair for nine of those 10 years. He is the current Chair of Franklin’s Master Plan Committee and is the co-chair of Franklin’s Anti-Bullying Task Force.

Democratic primary results and campaign notes

Here are the results of the Democratic primary election from Thursday, September 6, 2012 (as reported in the Boston Globe):

I was proud to have participated in this race with my worthy opponent Peter Padula.  Peter was tenacious and put everything into this campaign.  He kept us on our toes at all times and made us work hard too.  It was great to see the high level of civic engagement that we had during this race (culminating in the swarm of activities at the polls as shown in the photo below).

Peter and his campaign volunteers were diplomatic and engaging and helped us achieve a civilized debate focused on the issues at stake for the residents of Franklin and Medway.  It was an honor to have Peter on the other side of this race, and the tone and tenor of the campaign made us both better candidates.  I look forward to working with him through November and beyond on behalf of the residents in the 10th Norfolk District.

Congressman McGovern’s endorsement speech

Here is the video of Congressman Jim McGovern’s endorsement speech from earlier this evening. It is indeed an honor and privilege to have his support in this race and to have him in Franklin as our United States Representative.  He is a model legislator and I will work to provide the same level of constituent services that he has provided to our community over the years.

Making a commitment to the challenge

Last weekend, our candidate pedaled through Franklin as part of a team of over 5,000 cyclists participating in the Pan Mass Challenge.  It was his 10th ride in the fight against cancer.

“The event has become an important part of my life,” noted Roy.  “Over the years, I have lost too many dear friends and relatives diagnosed with cancer.  I often wondered what I could do to help.  When I finally heard about the PMC, then I knew there was something meaningful I could do to honor them. By joining the PMC team, I knew I could become one of the thousands of cyclists who call upon their strength to help others.”

Riding in the PMC is a way to channel physical, mental, and emotional energy into something much greater than the athletic accomplishment that is gained by riding up to 192 miles. PMC cyclists use their strength to help those who cannot.

Roy added, “The ride took me off the campaign trail for a few days, but I am committed to this fight to eradicate cancer and will ride each summer until we find a cure.”  He started riding in 2003 as part of the Phil’s Phriends team from Franklin, following the death of one of his friends who succumbed to colon cancer.

The brief film above was part of the opening ceremonies for the 2012 PMC and speaks to the mission of the event.  Jeff was honored to participate in the making of it.  As he noted, “Riding in this event for the last 10 years has taught me a lot about the importance of making a commitment and working hard to achieve your goal. It has taught me that committed people with a unified mission can accomplish great things for one another. And commitment is a big part of running and serving as a State Representative.”
